“This is why I told you this guy was probably going to be a waste of time,” Kael, now back in his human form like the rest of us, said. “Though I’m pretty sure none of you were listening to me; he’s always been crazy. And apparently solitary confinement has made it worse.”

“Thanks for the situation rundown, Captain Optimistic,” Vanessa snapped back—which I was glad for, because it meant the two of them could bicker instead of me and Kael bickering for once. Because I had more important things to worry about.

Because crazy or not, this guy was the only lead we had at the moment, and I was not losing him before I got more information out of him

His skip had quickly turned into a run, and my senses told me he remained human, but he was still fast. I probably could have caught him much easier in my lycan form, of course, but I wanted to stay human. I figured keeping this brain in control gave me a much better chance of recognizing and fighting any more illusions Faolan might throw our way.

I still had my doubts about the things I was seeing, though, when we curved our way around a giant, bald rock face of the mountain and found ourselves staring at a tiny little hut some fifty feet ahead. I cut my eyes toward him. “Just like there’s no such thing as werewolves?”

“Exactly,” he said, flashing that charmingly lopsided grin of his.

As we talked, Eli walked on without hesitation, and he was halfway to the door before I realized it and rushed forward myself. I wanted to go first. I don’t know why; Eli knew a lot more about what we were potentially walking into, maybe. But I’d always felt sort of protective of him. Just the instincts that came with being a big sister, I guess— he was younger than me, close to Lora’s age, so I felt the need to jump between him and any witches, same as I would always do for my sister.

I pushed Lora’s face from my mind as I cautiously reached for the door of the house. One finger at a time, I allowed my touch to close around the brass handle, and then I took a deep breath, and I pushed.

The door swung forward to reveal an open room with a dirt floor, its walls crowded with overfilled shelves. There was more junk than I’d ever want to attempt to count on those shelves; little figurines and dog-eared
